A little insight into the most important factor in starting my business... 'WHY?'

A little insight into the most important factor in starting my business...WHY?

Now I will let you in on ‘why’ I am launching a new online business. Robert Kiyosaki focuses on this concept in his best-selling Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

I am not sure where you fall on the whole Rich Dad, Poor Dad spectrum: Some people support Kiyosaki’s advice, others aren’t big fans.  I enjoyed the book and would recommend you get your hands on it if you are serious about launching your own business and taking hold of your financial future >> click here for more info

If you are looking at beginning your own business I suggest you take some time to work through the WHY first. Not only will it help you with the WHAT and HOW but it will also provide you with the drive you will need to keep on keeping-on.

So, here is my WHY factor:

  • The biggest ‘WHY’ for me is that this is to be a gift for my incredible wife. She is such a wonderful friend to me and mother to our little tribe. She currently works outside the home four days a week, which she would rather not do. She is a real trooper though, manages to perform her job, volunteer at the school, keep our house in order, help out at church, the list goes on. I would love for us to be in a position where she would no longer have to work outside of our home. So I really want to get this business rolling, make it profitable, replace her income and help her continue the business, even expand the business if it can be done without taking her away from the family. Beginning an online business is the one way I see where there is real potential for this to happen.
  • Can you say: SIX children ??? - Seriously, not just for the day-to-day expenses like food, shoes and doctor visits, but college isn’t getting any cheaper. We want to be able to help them with their educational expenses so they don’t finish college only to ‘start out’ with huge college-related debt.
  • Although the non-profit I work for takes very good care of our family and we are very appreciative, the non-profit sector doesn’t provide the highest paying jobs out there. We are definitely not in it for the money… I do it because I feel that is what I was created to do! Yet I do want to be responsible when it comes to providing for our future. I mentioned college for our children but I also need to consider providing for my family when it comes to retirement or if something were to happen to me. These are important reasons for developing a business and new income stream.
  • I have a great desire to do my part in making our world a better place. Although we contribute now, there are several specific causes that I would like to support more regularly. I would love to develop the business in such a way that we can contribute an ever greater percentage to these causes.
  • A final big WHY is a very real and specific issue we are currently facing. We relocated over 2500 miles almost two years ago for a new assignment. We placed our old home on the market and have yet to sell it. It is a great house in a wonderful coastal town in Southwest Florida… but the market has been so poor that it looks like it might be a long time before the house sells. This has placed an additional financial burden on us that we were not expecting to be carrying for this long. I need to be able to generate some additional income to help cover the expenses for this home until we are able to sell it.

There you have it: My WHY for this whole business project.

The next question I am tackling is the WHAT… not WHAT business exactly (I don;t know that yet) but WHAT are the essential characteristics I am looking for in a new business.

But before I head there, let me ask you: If you are considering starting your own business, what are your ‘WHYs’?
