Day 21: I think she is getting suspicious…?

Welcome back to BizLaunchBlog.com! Thanks for following me on my quest to launch and develop an online business as a gift for my wife. Share your advice, comment on a post and tell your friends... Peace, JMichael

Can you help satisfy my curiosity?

Can you help satisfy my curiosity?

Hey crew… I have had to work extra hard recently on going incognito (not to be confused with going commando) as my beautiful wife has mentioned that I have been on the computer a lot more recently than usual.

We had an awesome conversation (totally unrelated to anything about launching an online business… I am so slick) about how life might be different if she wasn’t working outside the home four days each week.  As we chatted I found myself even more energized and motivated to get this business GOING!

I wanted to ask you all a question that has been nagging me today:  How long did it take for you to get your online business profitable? And the follow up question: How much are you earning each month?

I realize that might seem a little too personal… no worries.  If you do not want to share, we can still be friends. :)  But… if you would be willing to let me in on how you are doing with your business it might help satisfy my curiosity :)

I remember reading on a woman’s blog (wish I could remember where!) over the past few weeks about her success.  If I remember correctly her online business focused on launching niche retail websites….?  Anyway, she began by setting up two or three such sites and was making money within 30 days. She posted how much she was making and it was a couple hundred bucks.  She launched one or two more niche sites over the next few months.  I seem to recall that she had 5 niche sites after 120 days and was bringing in over $800 per month off those sites. I believe her plan was to continue launching new niche sites and watch her income increase.  Sounds like a great plan!  (By the way, if this example seems really familiar to you, like it could be you, please let me know so I can give you credit! Thanx!)

So how are your businesses doing?  I am putting the pressure on myself to really get this cranked out and profitable so my wife can come home.  Any thoughts?  Maybe you could share your plan and projections as a little inspiration for your good buddy, JMichael?

Instead of writing volumes of information, I’ll simply get to the bottom line …

If you want to do yourself and your wife a huge favor, stay completely away from travel programs. The only trip you’ll end up taking is into a pool of quicksand! As a business coach and mentor, I’d like to strongly suggest you get a free subscription to “MLMWatchdog”.

To be genuinely successful in network marketing, do not align yourself with business models that drive the behavior of Recruit! Recruit! Recruit! 97% of people hate to sell and hate to be sold.

Stairstep breakaway comp plans and Aussie 1 up’s and 2 up’s will not lead your wife down a path to happy land.

I have heard stories about people making good money within a couple of months of starting an online business but it takes focus and dedication. I myself have been working at it for about 4 years now and am making only about $2000-2500 per month which is a bit disappointing but maybe it can be expected.

The reason that my business has taken so long to get anywhere I believe is because I was floating between ideas, trying to learn too much, not focusing on keyword research so that I could get my message in front of people and mostly just not doing the sork necessary to be successful.

I still have all of these bad habits but I believe if you focus on just one thing at a time and get a site up with content coming consistently (I use Wordpress as my publishing engine) then the traffic will come and then you can focus on converting that traffic into buyers.

The thing to always keep in mind is that while a good company, comp plan and product are all important, that’s not where you’re MAIN focus should be.

Your focus should be on your marketing system.

See, you can be HIGHLY successful in almost ANY network marketing business or any other online business for that matter so long as you have an automated marketing system in place.

The problem with most people’s marketing systems is that they require massive manual effort on their part, aren’t as effective as they need to be, and aren’t enjoyable. If you can put together a marketing system that is more automated (not saying you won’t have to work, just that your marketing system will bring you quality prospects without manual effort on your part), then you’ll be successful in pretty much any company that you choose.

And let’s be honest, you didn’t want to cold call purchased leads, put fliers under windshield wipers and bug your family and friends anyway did ya?

In addition, you should be looking to join the right team. There is WAY too much to go into here, but suffice it to say, your team should be supporting you, training you and helping you with marketing systems that have been proven to work. The problem is almost ALL teams in all companies claim to do this. So find out some things like:

    * if they have weekly training calls for JUST your team,
    * find out if they’d be willing to schedule a weekly call with just you for at least 30 minutes per week for the first month (they should offer this without you asking)
    * ask for the names and numbers of at least 3 people in their team that you can call to see how happy they are

Your upline can’t make you successful (and shouldn’t be expected to), but they can sure help the process along by helping you to become a leader and grow personally and professionally. There is more that you could find out but I’m sure you get the point.

Now, finally, let me address the question you asked in your post. You will get asked the question that you asked us in this post (or your wife will) eventually and I think you should be aware of how to handle it.

First, as to what I make, let me just answer that this way…I have been working independently from home for just over 4 years and earn a healthy 6 figure annual salary from it.

HOWEVER…it’s not about what anyone who responds to this post IS or can make…it’s about what YOU can make. This is the ONLY truthful answer you can give someone…you should even follow it up with “JMichael, there’s SOME people that even LOSE money in this business, so it really comes down to what YOU’RE going to do”.

So much of this business is the right posture, integrity and leadership. To lead people with integrity, you HAVE to be honest and truthful.

Hope this helps you and your readers.

    I think Jason is correct.

Additionally, you should not only work on your marketing system, but on marketing yourself. Work on setting yourself up to be a leader in being able to market YOU. This way you’ll be able to help others in any MLM and position yourself as top marketer. People will follow you and join you. Again, this can be applied no matter what company you join.

I think, you seem to be well on your way in that direction. You have great blog posts that seems to have a good following. Not many people have the gift to blog like you.

You can learn about this and other network marketing skills from other successfull networkmarketers at Betternetworker.com.
I just became a member about a month ago and there are so many things to learn from so many people.

    Good luck

Wow guys! There is some great stuff here! Thanks!

And I really agree with the importance of marketing! That is why I am trying to learn as much as I can as I start out.

Melanie - Why are you so down on the travel business? I have heard great stories of success from others… did you personally get burned? Just curious…

    Peace,
    JMichael

I agree with Melanie. Stay away from the travel sites. If the pay plan is structured where you are getting commissions for recruiting and NOT getting anything in return, that is a big red flag. You also need to look at where the industry is going, who is really traveling and are the prices on that site so much better than elsewhere, compelling a traveler to book thru you?

More and more people are driving to their vacations, if they are even taking one. As you know, Network Marketing is about the residual income. How much will you earn if someone books an airline flight thru your site? It’s not much…been there done that!

In my opinion, you want a product or service that someone will want to use, will need to use, month after month after month. There are a lot of great MLM companies and I suggest looking into ones outside of travel.
