Day 14: More than one business?

Welcome back to BizLaunchBlog.com! Thanks for following me on my quest to launch and develop an online business as a gift for my wife. Share your advice, comment on a post and tell your friends... Peace, JMichael

Do I need my head checked?

Do I need my head checked?

Friends, I need you. As I mentioned on an earlier post, I am really investing some time into researching a specific business opportunity in the travel industry.  All has been going quite well with the investigation process but I have run into a bit of a snag…

…it has nothing whatsoever to do with this potential business, the company behind it, the development process, or anything else associated with the business for that matter…

…it has everything to do with me, I think.  Maybe you can help me clear my mind on this…

…you see, I have come across a couple of other ideas that are very intriguing

…I am beginning to see the potential of operating businesses (yes I pluralized that last word) on the internet…

So here is today’s BIG question: how many of you operate more than one business online?

And let me throw out a couple follow-up questions:

  • do your multiple businesses complement one another, feed into and off of one another, or are they completely separate?
  • how long was your initial business operating before you launched your next business?
  • am I going crazy or is it possible to successfully run multiple profitable businesses online?

Thanks again for your advice.  I fear I may be becoming an internet business addict.  Will I need an intervention?

Peace.

JMichael

Are you looking to operate more than one business or more than one website? This can be two different things.

I have one business, and I operate many websites under it - all with different niches.

I started out with more than one business idea, but did not go into development of more than one site until I had a good hold on the first site.

Start with just one, and stuff your ideas for the others in a side folder. Get just one to work or not work before you take on too much.

Also, you can sell many different products in one business alone.

IE: you have a candle business? well, you can sell candles but you can also sell wicks and wax and different brands of candles, and books on candle making etc. Just one example.

So, it depends on your initial concept and where you are going with it. Just start with one, and after you are getting sales and are satisfied with what it is doing only then do you move on to the next.

    Hello,

I just read your post titled:
    “more than one business”

It’s possible to operate more than one but it could spread your marketing out kinda thin (depending on what you use for marketing sources). But if you have the time and resources, it can be done. The same marketing avenue you use for one business you can use for the other.

Sometimes it’s good to start with one and build that up to a certain level (like a certain amount of income or team members) and then add on another program.

I operate several biz-op programs myself and don’t have a problem with doing so. I also promote a golf tips website as well as a dating tips web site. The same marketing I use for golf, I use for the dating.

I know of several top Internet marketers that promote more than one biz and they do quite well. They build one program and when they’re ready to start another, they bring their team members from the 1st program into the 2nd program and the next and so on. At that point you are building multiple streams of income.

Just get a good autoresponder system for continued follow up.

It’s also a safe route to have more than one biz-op in case that first program shuts down for whatever reason… you don’t want to have to scramble around to look for another one.

JMichael, congrats on all the followers. Thats awesome. You have a very nicely done blog here and I enjoy reading it.

In regards to the multiple biz thing I think I would have to advise to concentrate on one thing at a time or else you might get pulled in too many directions. I tried it for a while and finally decided to concentrate on just 1. I picked the one that had the least amount of headaches and hassles. I now am working that biz fulltime. Well, I say full time but it is more like a part time biz with a full time income.

Keep in mind if this is a “gift” for your wife you don’t want to have her stressed out when she receives it. Keep it simple and let her be able to focus on one thing. You don’t want her to feel overwhelmed.

That being said a lot of companies will not let you represent multiple companies when you reach their higher levels. So by joining 2 companies you are setting yourself up for failure basically saying that there is no way I am ever going to make it to the level of “Grand Poohba, Diamond, Director or whatever the case may be. You might want to check into that.

If you are looking to make money in the travel industry make sure you check out http://www.YTBReport.com

They are going to be making some incredible announcements on the 18th of Oct. If you are interested I might be able to get you a link to that broadcast. YTB is looking at rolling out the “Franchise” concept to their program. I think it will put us lightyears ahead of the competition.

    Keep us informed!

    Hey Michael,

If your just getting started with marketing and on-line business the best advice that I could possibly give is to take the time to get educated before you start signing up for programs.

For someone new to it, and often even for people not so new to it, trying to run multiple business’ is not only impractical, it’s almost impossible! There are a bunch of things that you want to look for. Way to many to list in this reply, but it will be worth it to do the research. I would be happy to talk to you about some of the things to look for *and look out for!*.

Great blog! Looking forward to reading your progress!

    Justin

OK everybody… unfortunately I had my server go down so I am just getting everything updated, so hang on.

But let me respond to the previous comments on this thread:

Avenuegirl > Great point! I was thinking more than one business but perhaps related to one another… so maybe I mean more than one website… …I think I need to think on this some more. Thank you!

Robert Cummings > It is encouraging to know you operate more than one business at a time. May I ask, how profitable are your various businesses? Not to be nosy but are you making money on each? Do you think you could be more profitable if focused on just one? It seems you are involved in some network marketing: Does your downline stick with a business or are they just hopping from one to another? Thanks for your insight!

Randy > I agree… since this is a gift, I do not want my little lady stressed with too much going on. To be honest, the more I get into this the more I think I might want to have a business of my own! I did not know that some companies mandate you be exclusive once you reach the higher levels. No worry though, as I probably would not join more than one network marketing company. I am still not sure if I will join one at this point. Lot’s of good things about them but I am still trying to work through it all. How long did it take you to become profitable with YTB, if you don’t mind me asking?

Justin > I get what you mean about getting educated about online marketing! There is a lot to learn and a lot of good and bad. I have been online for a long time and have been overseen a variety of marketing methods for a brick & mortar business. Thanks for the pointer!

Well, that does it for this post… thanks in advance for your thoughts, insights and comments!

    Peace,
    JMichael

Who else don’t want to operate more than one business online. I definitely like to, but sometimes I have to really have time to do so. Currently none of my online business is automated. I sell in local auction sites and selling some products online which is not automated too.

I think in order to successful to run multiple online business there must have 2 important condition.
    1. it must be 100% automated
    2. you can easily and time to maintain multiple business. (blogging and mlm is a great choice)
    2. it must be long life products or services. If the products is short life. You have to start all over again with a new one.

I think you make a good choice
